New solar and wind powered streetlights installed at Bayside sales centre

July 23, 2013, Toronto, ON – The new Bayside Toronto sales centre will feature two ‘off-grid’ solar and wind powered streetlights. The streetlights, installed as part of a demonstration by Clear Blue Technologies and TowerLabs @MaRS, are designed to advance and promote the use of environmentally friendly solar and wind powered lighting. Clear Blue Technologies manufactures and sells the streetlights and TowerLabs @MaRS is a not-for-profit green building accelerator.

In addition to being wind and solar powered, the streetlights can be controlled, monitored and managed over the Internet. Currently under construction on Queen Quay just west of Parliament Street, the Bayside sales centre will open this September. The waterfront streetlight pilot installation is located on the south side of the intersection of Queens Quay East and Small Street.

After the sales centre opens, a display screen will show data about the lights including how much energy they produce and use and their real time status. As part of its partnership, TowerLabs will independently monitor and validate Clear Blue’s integrated lighting system and issue a comprehensive report on the technology.

Testing solar and wind powered street lamps on the waterfront supports Waterfront Toronto’s mandate to encourage market transformation and position the city as a world leader in creating sustainable communities. It also demonstrates Hines and Tridel’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Aqualina, the first condominium planned for Bayside, will pursue LEED® Platinum Certification – the highest rating possible within the LEED® Green Certification system.

Aqualina is being developed by Hines and Tridel (the exclusive residential partner for Bayside). It will be located at the water’s edge next to Sherbourne Common and is an integral part of Waterfront Toronto’s overall revitalization efforts in East Bayfront.
