Prior to committing to a full scale soil recycling facility, Waterfront Toronto decided to conduct a pilot. The goals of the pilot were to identify the range of treatment options and costs; confirm that impacted soil can be treated to standards set by the Ministry of the Environment Brownfield Regulation; and showcase treatment technologies.

April 9, 2012, Toronto, ON—Roger Anderson, Chair and CEO of the Region of Durham and member of FCM’s National Board of Directors and John Carmichael, member of Parliament for Don Valley West, today announced a $350,000 Green Municipal FundTM (GMF) grant in support of Waterfront Toronto’s Pilot Soil Recycling Facility.

Pilot Soil Recycling Facility Wins Brownie Award

November 4, 2010, Toronto, ON— Waterfront Toronto’s innovative approach to soil remediation and its Port Lands Pilot Soil Recycling Facility were recognized with a 2010 Canadian Urban Institute Brownie award.

 

The prestigious awards are considered the Canadian industry standard for recognizing excellence in leadership and innovation in brownfield redevelopment and commitment to the remediation of brownfield projects. Waterfront Toronto’s pilot soil recycling facility won in the Remediation Technologies and Technological Innovation category.

Waterfront Toronto unveils plans for a pilot soil recycling facility that will set new environmental sustainability standards

June 15, 2010, Toronto, ON— Waterfront Toronto today unveiled detailed plans for a pilot soil recycling facility in the Port Lands.  Once established it will be the only known soil washing-based pilot plant operating in Canada.

 

Waterfront Toronto is conducting the soil recycling pilot as part of its Soils Management Strategy to determine the viability of treating and reusing impacted soils as an alternative to the dig-and-dump approach.
