Two Waterfront Parks Win National Urban Design Awards

July 8, 2012, Toronto, ON—Canada’s Sugar Beach and Sherbourne Common, signature parks in Waterfront Toronto’s new East Bayfront neighbourhood, have been awarded 2012 National Urban Design Awards. Canada’s Sugar Beach was honoured in the Civic Design Projects category and Sherbourne Common received the ‘Sustainable Award’ in the same category.

Art and innovation form unique waterfront park

July 25, 2011, Toronto, ON— Waterfront Toronto and its government partners officially opened the completed Sherbourne Common, a unique park that seamlessly blends art and innovation.

Located in the heart of the new East Bayfront neighbourhood, Sherbourne Common is far more than the area’s main park. It is the first park in Canada to incorporate a neighbourhood-wide stormwater treatment facility. Public art is integrated with the water infrastructure to create a public space that is as beautiful as it is functional.

Innovative New Park Opens on Toronto's Downtown Waterfront

September 24, 2010, Toronto, ON – An innovative new park on Toronto’s waterfront that will clean stormwater in its Pavilion and public art installations and release the treated water back into Lake Ontario officially opened today.  Sherbourne Common is the third and largest new public space opened by Waterfront Toronto and its government partners since August in Toronto’s downtown waterfront area.

Park Name Approved

June 23, 2010, Toronto, ON— Toronto and East York Community Council has approved Sherbourne Common as the new name for East Bayfront’s signature waterfront park.  The new name, submitted by Doug Dent, was the winner of a month-and-a-half long naming contest which invited members of the public to submit their ideas for a new park name and to vote for their favourites online.

 

Winning name announced for new waterfront park

June 16, 2010, Toronto, ON— Sherbourne Common has been selected as the new name for East Bayfront’s signature waterfront park following a city-wide naming contest which invited members of the public to submit their ideas for a new park name and to vote for their favourites online.  The new name, which incorporates the park’s location with the idea of ‘the commons’ where park spaces belong to the people, must now be approved by Toronto and East York Community Council on June 22.

 

Top three names announced and final round of voting begins in naming contest for new waterfront park

June 9, 2010, Toronto, ON — The final round of voting in the Rename Sherbourne Park Contest is now underway.  Until June 15, the public may vote for one of three, top ranked park names chosen by the more than 1,500 people who voted during the contest’s first round of voting. The name with the most number of votes will ultimately become the new name of the park.
