Canada's Sugar Beach The Peoples Choice

June 10, 2012, Toronto, ON—Canada’s Sugar Beach has won the People’s Choice Award for best landscape architecture in the 2012 AZ Awards. The whimsical urban beach on Toronto’s waterfront earned more votes than Asia’s biggest botanical garden Shanghai Chenshan in China.

Azure Magazine, Canada’s leading contemporary design publication, announced the winners at its second annual AZ Awards in Toronto on June 7. In April, design and architecture enthusiasts from around the world were invited to vote online for their favourite designs in 14 categories. The short-listed projects were selected by a prestigious international jury of architects, landscape architects and other design professionals.

Azure Magazine’s editor Nelda Rodger described the caliber of entries from 30 countries as “especially high.” Sixty finalists were selected from the more than six hundred entries received.

Canada’s Sugar Beach is a popular addition to the waterfront, attracting both locals and tourists to East Bayfront. The urban beach features white Muskoka chairs and signature pink umbrellas that allow visitors to relax and enjoy views of the harbour. The park’s splash pad, with twenty-seven dynamic water jets, gives beachgoers a place to cool off.

Canada’s Sugar Beach, designed by Claude Cormier + Associès, has already won several awards including a 2011 Toronto Urban Design Award. It is located south of Queens Quay at the foot of Lower Jarvis Street.
