It’s official! Three new waterfront street names have been approved by Toronto East York Community Council – and you helped name them!

POSTED: JUNE 17, 2014

Merchants’ Wharf – which topped the list during our ‘Help Name a Waterfront Street’ contest – is the new name for Bayside’s main street. It connects to Queens Quay Boulevard and runs along the water’s edge. When the development is complete, Merchants’ Wharf will provide access to Lake Ontario as well as homes, shops, restaurants and offices in the area.

Two of the ‘runners-up’ from the contest – Kanadario Lane and Edgewater Drive – have also been approved for the smaller, private streets in the community.

The three approved street names reflect the themes we heard most frequently throughout the contest. Contest participants were looking for ways to commemorate the history of the waterfront, our First Nations people and the geographical significance of Lake Ontario.

Help Name a Waterfront Street was launched on March 12, 2014 by Waterfront Toronto. Over a two-week period, we asked the public to submit street name suggestions online or via Facebook/Twitter. More than 700 street name ideas were submitted and more than 2,000 people voted for their favourite name from our eight shortlisted street names.

The Bayside Toronto development is a 13-acre site at the water’s edge between Sherbourne Common and the Parliament Slip in East Bayfront. Waterfront Toronto selected Hines as our development partner for the site with its residential partner Tridel, is completely transforming an industrial area into a thriving new community at the water’s edge.
